Following its suspension in 2011, discussions are now underway regarding its reintroduction to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. A new military service model has been in effect since January 2026: All 18-year-old men must complete a questionnaire assessing their suitability, while participation is voluntary for women. Is a new form of compulsory military service a necessary step for national defense, or is it an outdated model that infringes too deeply on the civil liberties of young people? Should the Bundeswehr rely solely on a volunteer basis to recruit more personnel? Should a modern conscription system be gender-neutral, or should there be a general service obligation?
