 In 1163, an abbot from the Cistercian monastery of Volkenroda came to Loccum from Thuringia with twelve monks to found a new settlement here. It was named after the Lucca Castle. Construction began in 1240. Today, Loccum Monastery is one of the best-preserved Cistercian monasteries north of the Alps.

The service is held in the church on Sundays at 10:00 a.m., and the hora is held from Monday to Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
In winter, the church is open until dusk, otherwise until 18:00.
