The “Porphyry Fan” National Geotope at Schmieders Graben is the highlight of the geological open-air museum in the Tharandt Forest.

 The Porphyry Fan was designated a natural monument in 1958 and a National Geotope in 2019. The rock here is a “low-quartz porphyry” (reddish-brown to grayish-violet), a volcanic rock with numerous porous, reddish-streaked inclusions and an age of approximately 300 million years. The jointing forms a fan shape, which gave the former quarry its name (cooling cracks).
