800 years of history: The church of St Wilibrord in Neetze

This venerable church, which bears the name of a missionary from the 7th and 8th centuries, looks back on an impressive history of around 800 years, which is reflected in its architecture.
Its true showpiece is the late Gothic altar, which was created in the first half of the 15th century. However, this altar also contains treasures from later eras, including Low German inscriptions from 1959, which are skilfully engraved on the wings.
This altar found its way to Neetze by mysterious means, although it was originally intended for the resting place of a Lüneburg monastery abbot.
The pulpit, which was created around 1600, is just as remarkable. It is richly decorated with the symbols of the evangelists and a pelican, which symbolises sacrifice in Christian symbolism. The organ, which was built in 1869, is now a listed building and bears witness to the long musical tradition of this church.
