Directions

An ideal start for the small family bike route is Pirna. There you can either take the ferry to Pirna-Copitz or take the short way over the city bridge. Then follow the street to the junction to Posta. On Grundstraße followed by Arthur-Thiemann-Straße it goes not too steep further to Pirna-Mockethal. At the intersection you then turn right onto Wehlener Straße and only about 100 meters further you turn left into "Herrenleite" and now follow the bike path that runs along the old railway line and the Kratzbach to the Feldbahnmuseum Herrenleite. A visit is especially worthwhile on the Railway Experience Days in April or also on the Summer Riding Days. After the visit, it then continues towards Dorf Wehlen, past the Kamerun quarry, where sandstone is still being mined today. Shortly before Dorf Wehlen you leave the forest and ride briefly along a field path to Pirnaer Straße. Here it then goes left down to Dorf Wehlen. On weekdays, open from April to early November, a visit to the Miniature Park "Kleine Sächsische Schweiz" should definitely be planned. Please be sure to note in planning that the duration of the route changes due to stays in the Feldbahnmuseum and/or in the Miniature Park. Then it continues along Pirnaer Straße, always following it to the market in Stadt Wehlen. A detour to the newly built Burg Wehlen with the Burg Wehlen children's trail should not be missed at the end. But also an ice cream or a tasty snack in one of the cafés is recommended. Then take the ferry across to the other side of the Elbe and back on the Elbe cycle path via Obervogelgesang to Pirna.

Equipment

No special equipment necessary. However, a helmet is always recommended. If needed, a follow-me or a bike tow rope if the children run out of steam.

The route is moderately suitable for racing bikes in parts due to rough cobblestones shortly after Herrenleite, and pushing may be necessary briefly. Trekking, gravel, and city bikes as well as mountain bikes should have no problems on the route.

Safety guidelines

The bike route is recommended for families with children from 6 years old who can already ride quite securely, have stamina and can follow streets well. Most streets are, however, lightly trafficked, so the risk is low. The descent from Dorf Wehlen to Stadt Wehlen can be fast, so please watch out for children riding along.
