A leisurely hike up the smallest table mountain in Saxon Switzerland. Caspar David Friedrich once wandered these hills. His is arguably the best-known painting of the German Romantic period. It depicts a well-to-do hiker in a frock coat and with a walking stick, on a rock in and gazing at a landscape of partly bizarrely shaped mountain peaks rising from billowing morning fog. The landscape depicted in the painting is Saxon Switzerland. For Friedrich, who spent most of his life in Dresden, the nearby rocky landscape was a place of longing, inspiration, and refuge in a world that had fallen apart.

Directions

The tour starts at the village square in Schöna. The trail follows the Caspar David Friedrich Trail up to the Kaiserkrone. Incidentally, the Kaiserkrone is the heavily eroded remnant of a table mountain. Three different viewpoints offer an impressive panorama featuring the Schrammstein Range, the Großer Winterberg, and Bohemian Switzerland. The tour then leads across flat terrain to the Zirkelstein, considered the smallest of the local table mountains. A series of iron ladders leads up to the rocky plateau. A worthwhile stop after the hike is the “Am Zirkelstein” inn in Schöna, where delicious dishes are lovingly prepared.
