Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg was born in 1797 in Wolfshagen in the Harz. As a master carpenter, he came to Seesen in 1825 to work there.

Here Heinrich Engelhard initially repaired upright pianos on the side until he established himself as an instrument maker in 1836. He specialized in building pianos and emigrated to New York with his family in 1850. There they founded the internationally renowned company Steinway & Sons. The Steinweg family, later Steinway, always maintained contact with their Harz homeland and visited repeatedly.
