A visit to the forge in the tower can easily be combined with a tour of the tower
The smithy is a gift from the master blacksmith Hermann Döhler. It dates back to 1870 and was integrated into the church tower with funding from the Braunschweig Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Curt Mast Jägermeister Foundation. Another attraction is a Romanesque central pillar dating from 1051. #The Döhler smithy: Blacksmithing and the art of forging was obviously in the blood of the traditional Schöppenstedt Döhler family and the profession of village blacksmith and wagon maker was successfully practised for generations. The blacksmith's business was founded around 1870 in Schöppenstedt on the corner of Braunschweiger Straße and Nordbahnhof. Until the 1970s, the blacksmith's trade was practiced there by the male members of the family. When the business came to a standstill for years due to economic changes, it was decided to rebuild this technical monument in the church tower of St. Stephanus true to the original in order to preserve it for posterity. #Smithing and tools: In the smithy, visitors will find classic tools and workpieces from the art of blacksmithing from a bygone era that make our present day seem like a high-tech age. A visit not only offers those interested in nostalgia the opportunity to take a look at the past, but is also aimed at technically interested contemporaries. But that's not all, because this journey through time is also recommended for children and young people. A guided tour offers more than just entertainment and variety, as Mr. Tuchen, an experienced blacksmith, demonstrates various tools and has stories from the past to tell. In addition to the rare tools and workpieces, you can also see old documents and evidence of the blacksmith's trade in and around Schöppenstedt. **A visit to the smithy in the tower can be easily combined with a tour of the tower. The approximately 1000-year-old column in the basement of the tower is well worth seeing and suggests that the Schöppenstedt region was settled in the past.
