Church
The largest Protestant church in Nordhausen is the St. Blasii Kirche.

The first mention of a church building was made in a document issued in the reign of Heinrich VII in 1234. His father, Friedrich II, had instructed Heinrich to build a new district with a church north of the town of Nordhausen, which was placed under the jurisdiction of the cathedral chapter. At the end of the 15th century, the nave was replaced by a new building, which was added to the late Romanesque-early Gothic west towers of the previous building. In 1524, the reformer Johann Spangenberg, who was a friend of Martin Luther, was appointed as pastor of St Blasii Kirche. Nordhausen therefore set an early example in the Reformation movement, which the town quickly joined. The Mayor Michael Meyenburg was also an advocate of the religious revolution. The two asymmetrical, inclined towers give the St. Blasii church a striking appearance. In 1634, lightning struck one of the towers and the former spire was replaced by a smaller helmet. The church is open to the public and visitors can visit the impressive building, which has been renovated in recent years.
