In November 1981, after four months of construction, the lake was completed. This required earth movements in the order of 70,000 m³. In addition to local recreation, the landscape lake serves ecological purposes, in particular for water birds, reptiles and amphibians. In addition to the deep water areas with water depths of up to 3.00 m, shallow water areas have been created in the southern part to cover all necessary habitats. Islands with mature trees provide protection zones in the middle of the lake, while the edge area is home to over 6000 plants and native deciduous trees. After the construction of the approx. 1.3 km long circular hiking trail and the installation of the benches, the lake quickly found favor with the local population and represents an enrichment of the local quality of life.
In July 1982, the landscape lake "Maringen Diek" was handed over to its destination in the presence of the Lower Saxony Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forestry with the unveiling of the eponymous erratic boulder. The total costs of around DM 531,000 were borne 85% by the state of Lower Saxony, with the municipality of Flecken Diepenau contributing 15%. The fishing club "Petri Heil" Diepenau took over the maintenance of the inner area in return for the fishing rights. Since the completion of the shelter by the fishing club, the lake has also become a popular destination for cyclists.
