The church of St. Lamberti, named after a medieval martyr, stands in the center of Selsingen
The church tower shows that a place of worship stood on today's church square for a long time. The first Christians in Selsingen existed before the year 900. The foundation walls of the tower, which may date back to the 11th century, are still standing. Inside the entrance, a huge boulder can be seen, which may have been part of an ancient Germanic place of worship that was displaced by the church. Inside the tower is the oldest movable object in the church: the Lambertus bell. It was cast by Hinrich Klinghe in 1469. The other four bells date from the 1950s.
The current St. Lambert's Church dates back to 1725. The fieldstone church was rebuilt on the site where a smaller church had previously stood because the old church had become too small. A plaque behind the altar describes the construction and renovations in simple terms. The bright and simple interior of the church invites you to linger in silence.
The old churchyard, which you have to walk through to get into the church, also bears witness to the church's long history. The oldest gravestones, which are located near the north entrance, date back to the 17th century, while the most recent stones and crosses date back to the last decades of the 19th century. In 1984, the new cemetery in Bahnhofstraße was put into operation.
Selsingen is an Evangelical-Lutheran worshipping community. The Sunday and holiday services, which are attended by many parishioners, are characterized by a rich liturgy without rejecting newer developments. Communion is celebrated once a month during the service.
