The renaturation of the former gravel extraction site was carried out exclusively with nature conservation and landscape management in mind. In fact, the newly created shallow water zones, bays, reed beds and a peninsula were soon colonized by various animal and plant species. Due to its increasing importance for water birds and amphibians, Lake Wiedesee and its shore zones were designated a nature reserve in 1984.
Nordic swans, geese, ducks, mergansers and various species of waders use the lake as a resting and wintering habitat. Large flocks of lapwings, golden plovers, wood thrushes and ospreys also spend time in the area from late summer onwards. Regular breeding birds here include yellowhammer, pouched tit, reed warbler, song thrush and wren.
The special character and beauty of the landscape, characterized by the water areas, reed zones and riparian meadows in the middle of the agricultural landscape, should also be preserved, maintained and developed.
The northern section I of the water body is used as fishing water. The protected area ordinance allows sport fishing here subject to restrictions. For example, it is prohibited to introduce fertilizer, lime, fish food or fish treatment products into the water. Fish stocking is possible under certain conditions.
The southern section II of the lake, including the peninsula, is not used. The landowner of this approximately 26-hectare area is the state of Lower Saxony.
The Wiedesee is a particularly important retreat and regeneration area for birdlife, but is also sensitive to disturbance and may not be entered by the general public.
