Leisurely round up the smallest table mountain in Saxon Switzerland. Caspar David Friedrich was already on the move here. His "Wanderer over the Sea of Fog" is probably the best-known painting of German Romanticism. It shows a well-to-do hiker with a frock coat and walking stick standing on a rock in contemplation of a landscape of partly bizarrely shaped mountain peaks rising out of a wafting morning mist. The landscape depicted in the painting is Saxon Switzerland. For Friedrich, who spent most of his life in Dresden, the nearby rocky world was a place of longing, inspiration and refuge in a world that was coming apart at the seams.

Directions

The starting point of the tour is the village square in Schöna. The Caspar-David-Friedrich-Weg leads up to the Kaiserkrone. The Kaiserkrone, by the way, is the highly jagged remnant of a table mountain. Three different vantage points offer an impressive panorama with the Schrammstein chain, the Großer Winterberg and Bohemian Switzerland.

The tour then leads through flat terrain over to the Zirkelstein, which is considered the smallest of the local table mountains. A series of iron ladders leads up to the rock plateau. A worthwhile stop after the tour is the "Am Zirkelstein" inn in Schöna, where delicious dishes are lovingly prepared from regional ingredients.
