The lake is located on the edge of the Arnsberg Forest between the Westphalian lowlands, the Haarstrang hills and the Sauerland and is thus on the main migration path of many waterbirds.

Between 1908 and 1913, the Möhne dam was built in Günne. This created the Möhne Reservoir, whose main task is to provide water for the industrial area of the Ruhr. Lake Möhne is a European bird sanctuary.

The nature reserve "Hevearm-Hevesee" has large open water areas, a variety of shoreline structures and adjoining Beech forests and near-natural Oak-dominated mixed forests. The two small rivers "Heve" and "Kleine Schmalenau" flow into the lake here. There are marshy areas where numerous amphibians spawn in the spring, e.g. the strictly protected Natterjack Toad. On the muddy shores of the lake you can with luck observe wading birds, including Green Sandpiper, Greenshank and Little Ringed Plover during the migration periods.
