- Start: church in Eudenbach
The Eudenberg is an abandoned quarry with various extraction plateaus in the area of a former volcanic cone. Basalt was quarried here from the end of the 19th century until 1967 and transported away by rail via a separate connection to the former Hennef - Asbach railroad line in the valley. While today its flanks on the upper slope are covered with dense mixed deciduous forest, there are meadows at the foot of the slope and a protected biotope has formed since the closure of the quarry. A quarry pond formed in the deepest part of the quarry. If you compare old pictures of the ongoing demolition with the current state, it is hard to imagine the enormous quantities of rock that were transported away in tiny goods wagons. Today, the quarry is inaccessible and closed to visitors and we walk around the old volcanic cone on our hike on old farm tracks or in the Hanfbachtal valley on the old railroad line, which can hardly be seen in its entirety from Asbach to Hennef.
