The oldest house on the island dates back to 1826, after the devastating storm surge of 1825 destroyed most of the houses. Three churches had to be abandoned beforehand and fell victim to the raging North Sea. The history of the Old Island Church is told at lectures or readings there, but can also be explored in the Old Customs House Museum. The striking little building was restored by the local history association at the beginning of the 1990s and is now used for church weddings and christenings in small groups as well as the aforementioned lectures. A wonderful tradition is the early morning service with the rising sun on Easter Sunday. In summer, evening services are held in the Old Island Church from Monday to Friday.
