The Förderkreis zum Erhalt der ev. Pfarrstelle (support group for the preservation of the Protestant parish) ensures that an entire parish is preserved on the smallest East Frisian island for the future. The church is also home to the "library in the tower", where literature for young and old can be borrowed on Tuesdays and Fridays from 16:00 to 17:00 during the season. The latest titles from the bestseller lists are represented as well as great world literature. From the church tower, there is a wonderful view to the east over the island.
When the number of bathers on the island increased after the First World War, the capacity of the old church with its 50 seats was exceeded, so the large island church was built between 1929 and 1930, initially without side aisles, which were added in 1959. In 1964/65, the tower was raised and two smaller bells were added to the existing large bell. These two bronze bells come from the Glockengießerei Otto from Bremen-Hemelingen. They were cast in 1965 and have the following chimes: des'' and es'' and weigh 240 kg and 170 kg.[2][3] Today the building has room for 300 people and is the parish's main church.
Evening services are held in the Old Island Church on Mondays and Fridays during the season.
East of the Great Church is the parish hall, which was inaugurated on September 11, 2003.
