Until a few years ago, the "Harzer Rote Höhenvieh" was still threatened with extinction because it could not keep up with the new performance breeds and became economically uninteresting. The Thielecke family took on this special breed in 2001. Almost 400 animals now tend to around 500 hectares of grassland and ensure that the mountain meadows in the middle of the forests that are characteristic of the Harz Mountains are preserved.
Beef and pork
However, the Brocken farmer not only uses the Harz Red Alpine cattle as landscape gardeners, but also as meat producers. Their beef and pork from the Angler Saddleback pig have been awarded the "Typically Harz" certificate. The Brockenbauer fulfills all the criteria of the regional brand. For example, most of the animals' feed comes from their own production or is sourced from an organic farm in the Harz region and the animals are also slaughtered in the region, saving them a long journey. All these factors guarantee first-class sausage and meat quality.
Sausage and ham specialties
In our own organic butcher's shop with farm slaughter, the animals are slaughtered stress-free and in familiar surroundings without long transport routes. In this way, the family motto "Everything from a single source", i.e. from birth and rearing to slaughtering and processing our own animals, is realized. The "Typically Harz" products in organic quality can be sampled in the new steakhouse and restaurant with farm store, alongside other regional products. The steakhouse and farm store are open daily from 11 am to 6 pm and on Friday and Saturday until 9 pm.
Visit to the show farm
Group tours of the show farm provide information on the cultural heritage of the Harz Red Mountain cattle in a clear and entertaining way. In this way, the Brockenbauer aims to raise awareness of farming in the mountains and interest in the endangered animal breeds. After all, the Harz Red Mountain cattle are not the only rare species on the farm. You can also meet the Harz mountain goat and the herding dog "Harzer Fuchs", which is still actively used in the work here. In this way, visitors can see for themselves the natural, species-appropriate husbandry of the animals on site.
