The building was constructed in 1888/89 by court architect Gerhard Schnitger based on the model of the Grand Ducal Court Theater in Oldenburg. It was given the name Deutsches Theater in 1950 under the artistic director Heinz Hilpert. As the largest of Göttingen's theaters, it offers a repertoire on four stages. The main auditorium has just under 500 seats.
