The Evangelical Lutheran parish of Bevern is made up of the villages of Bevern, Plönjeshausen and Mintenburg and has around 1,200 parishioners. Bevern is a lively community in which people live their faith with commitment and joy.
The Holy Cross Church, as it stands today on the main street of Bevern, was consecrated on March 14, 1880 and offers space for up to 350 worshippers.
From its beginnings around the year 986 until the end of the 19th century, however, the church was destroyed several times and had to be rebuilt. In the 16th century, for example, after the entire village of Bevern fell victim to a fire. And during the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648), in which the church was once again completely destroyed. This was followed by several extensions and conversions, partly to protect the church from decay.
The last demolition and complete reconstruction took place between 1877 and 1880 and cost around 70,000 Reichsmarks. An organ (by organ builder J. H. Röver from Stade) was also installed in the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche for the first time. The last renovation of the interior took place in 1965/66.
Like the nave, the bells also fell victim to the two world wars and had to be replaced.
The Gothic winged altar, restored to its original appearance, forms the central focus of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche today. Experts estimate its age to be around 500 years old.
