The Calvary Chapel was built in 1696 as the conclusion of a Stations of the Cross. It was destroyed on July 15, 1949, during the explosion of an ammunition depot. In October 1983, a new chapel was erected halfway up the Calvary Mountain.
The new chapel is an accurate reproduction of the old chapel on a smaller scale (but without crypt and sacristan's apartment). A bronze cross with scenes from the life of the Mother of God completes the choir area. The chapel, dedicated to "Our Lady," was consecrated on July 15, 1984, exactly 35 years after the explosion disaster.
In addition to the nearby playground for children, the area around the Calvary Chapel also offers a wonderful view of the city and the St. Salvator Basilica.
