It was built in the 9th century as a mission church on the old riverbed of the Leine, whereupon the church got its name due to its proximity to the water. The tower, made of rough masonry in a mixture of turf, boulders and bricks, is the only building of its time to have survived the various serious fires in Ahlden and the destruction caused by the Thirty Years' War largely unscathed. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1202 AD. From 1274, Ahlden was briefly the seat and center of an archdeaconry belonging to the diocese of Minden, which included up to 17 churches, including in Soltau, Walsrode and Wathlingen.
