Heather bloom
According to a rule of thumb, the heather blooms from 8 August to 9 September - but depending on the weather conditions, the heather bloom may start earlier or a little later. In the Klein Bünstorf Heath, the heather is in bloom. Botanically it is called Calluna vulgaris. The plants grow well on acidic and sandy soils.
Historical burial culture in the heath
In Klein Bünstorfer Heide lies one of the largest prehistoric burial sites in Lüneburg Heath: 59 burial mounds from the Bronze Age (up to 1200 BC) can be discovered here. At that time, the dead were buried with jewellery, weapons and other valuable grave goods in simple wooden and stone dugouts under mounds of earth.
Lönsstein
The Lönsstein stands in the middle of Klein Bünstorfer Heide. The large burrstone boulder commemorates the heath poet Hermann Löns. Benches at the Lönsstein invite you to take a break.
Home of rare animals
The heath is also home to the Argus blue butterfly. The butterfly belongs to the blue butterfly family and is on the Red List of endangered species. If you look closely, you can spot the small, shimmering blue butterfly in bloom on the Klein Bünstorfer Heide
