St. Nicholas' Cemetery was already laid out in the 12th century. Today it seems to be an enchanted place. Until the middle of the 19th century, it was the most important burial place in the city. More than 600 tombs from the Renaissance and Baroque periods characterise the cemetery. Particularly remarkable are the 16 crypts of important families of Görlitz, which were built from the early 17th to the mid-18th century and make St. Nicholas' Cemetery an outstanding cemetery monument.
Important citizens of the city were buried here, such as the famous theosophist Jacob Böhme (1575 - 1624).
In 1633 the cemetery was extended to the west to bury the dead of a plague epidemic. With the opening of the municipal cemetery in 1847 further burials were only an exception.
