This oldest church foundation in Görlitz was the city's main church until 1372. Works at St. Peter's Church were more important, so the late Gothic new building starting from 1452 had to wait. The southern portal with the sandstone figurines of St. Nicholas and St. Catherine was part of the further construction in 1515. The church, which was damaged several times by fires, served as a burial church for centuries. In 1925 it was converted into a memorial for soldiers killed in action of the First World War by Martin Elsässer in the style of Expressionism.
