Church
Highest building in the city with an architectural feature
St. Lamberti's Church on Rathausmarkt is something very special for the people of Oldenburg. With a tower height of 86 metres, it is considered the tallest building in the city - with a chequered history: Once built as a Romanesque hall church in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was transformed into a three-nave neo-Gothic hall church shortly afterwards. This style is still reflected in the brick façade. St. Lamberti's Church appears majestic, almost like a castle.

Between neo-Gothic and classicism

In 1791, however, Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig had the now dilapidated Protestant house of worship renovated in the classicist style and extended by a rotunda, which is said to be reminiscent of the Roman Pantheon. In contrast to the neo-Gothic façade, the interior of the church is round. The dome opening of the rotunda creates a connection to the sky. St. Lamberti's Church is one of only five round churches in Germany. In addition to church services, musical events such as concerts, for example by choirs or jazz bands, also take place here on a regular basis.
