The history of the church in Rehburg is older than the church building that can be seen in the center of the village today. There was a castle chapel until 1350, to which the parish rights of the church of Münchhausen were later transferred. The village of Münchhausen as well as the castle and church were located on the Haarberg between Winzlar and Rehburg. After the destruction of Münchhausen in the Hildesheim Collegiate Feud (1519-1523), the small chapel that existed in Rehburg was consecrated as a church.
If you look at the church building from the north side, you will notice that the mighty tower on the west side does not quite fit in with the rest of the building. The reason: it is an old defensive tower, first mentioned in 1331, on which the church spire was placed in 1585. A wooden structure was initially attached to this tower, which was replaced by the current building in 1748.
Let's take a look inside the church: the eye first rests on the altarpiece, then wanders up to the restored organ with the angel figures. The eye wanders to the right to the 12th century stone baptismal font and the richly illustrated 17th century wooden pulpit, which surprises with its splendour of color in the otherwise plain church, until it finally catches sight of the simple wooden cross with the crucified Jesus.
The church also contains the baptismal font in which the ancestors of the "Baron of Lies" Hieronymus Baron von Münchhausen were baptized.
