A varied walk through the Aatal nature experience in Bad Wünnenberg leads from the spa gardens along the paddling pond, next to the animal and forest enclosure at the edge of the forest to the dam wall at the Aabach dam. The way back takes walkers through fragrant forest back to the starting point.

This relaxing route is ideal for getting to know the picturesque and varied Aatal valley in Bad Wünnenberg. In the spa park, you will find nature shaped by man, but animals and plants in the meadows, pastures and at the fish-rich paddling pond are also wonderful to observe. The scent of the forest is fragrant, even though everything there is in a state of flux. The large expanse of water at the Aabachtalsperre is relaxing - and not just for the eyes.

The walk can be extended at will by 9 km around the drinking water reservoir (unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the circular route).

It is a circular route, so you can return to the starting point at the end.

Directions

The start is at the eastern entrance to the Bad Wünnenberg spa gardens directly opposite the small bridge to the entrance to the forest swimming pool. You can enter the park in a westerly direction and look straight ahead onto a large lawn with interspersed flower beds. If you cannot continue straight ahead, turn left towards a small pond with a fountain.

Now stay on the path, leave the part of the spa park and cross the small street "In den Erlen". The path leads along meadows towards the popular paddling pond. Turn right there so that the water remains on your left. Part of the barefoot path runs parallel to our paved path. Then meander past the Aatalhaus, leave the children's playground on the left and continue straight ahead between the wild animal enclosure and the Aabach (sometimes somewhat hidden on the right). When the path forks, turn left. Now follow the path past the Kneipp oasis with treading pool and arm pool, past some interesting activity stations for children, until you can turn right.

You will cross the bridge over the Aabach stream to the swan ponds of the local fishing club. On the left is a large meadow where Heck cattle graze. Continue straight ahead until you reach the asphalted Waldbachweg and turn left - continuing alongside the large meadow where the Heck cattle graze.

The next opportunity to turn left is 500m away. Then immediately turn right again onto the path and 300m later turn right again up a fairly steep incline through the forest. At the top, you will come to the asphalt path again, which you follow to the left until you reach the Aabachtalsperre dam.

Be careful when crossing the busy road of the dam. Then turn left and enjoy the view from the dam wall towards the water or Bad Wünnenberg. Walk along the dam wall to the other end. Then cross the district road again by turning left into the forest opposite. At the end of the path (here it goes steeply downhill) at the bottom of the valley, turn right again  up the path into the forest.

Here you can enjoy the quiet gravel path through the forest for approx. 1 km. At the long bend, a narrow forest path leads down the hill to the left through dense bushes. At the bottom, cross a stream over a wooden bridge and keep right after the bridge.

On the right-hand side, you will pass a beekeeping station and an insect hotel, while on the left-hand side you can look into the game reserve from above. Shortly after crossing the downhill trail (watch out for mountain bikers), turn left and return to the paddling pond. Keep to the right there, keeping the paddling pond on your left.

At the end of the paddling pond, keep straight on at the fork and turn left for 200 m to meet the Aabach again. After crossing a small bridge, you will come to the "In den Erlen" road again, which you follow to the parking lot in front of the forest swimming pool. This brings you back to the starting point.

Directions & Parking facilities

From the A33 or A44, follow the B480 towards Brilon.

In Bad Wünnenberg, turn left at the traffic lights into Mittelstraße. Then turn right into the street "Im Aatal". Follow the road for 750m.

Turn left at the 4th street. The street is called "In den Erlen" (note: the third junction is also called "In den Erlen"). The Kurpark is on the left-hand side. From the 90° bend, you can look for a parking space.

From the B480 coming from the south, follow the main road into the town and drive straight through a traffic circle (2nd exit). After 500m, take the 2nd road on the right into "Hoppenberg". Shortly before this, you will see a locksmith's shop on the right-hand side. Follow the Hoppenberg downhill and then straight on via "Im Aatal" across it into the street "In den Erlen". The spa gardens are on the left. From the 90° bend, you can look for a parking space.

Parking is available free of charge in the parking lots at the Bad Wünnenberg forest swimming pool, In den Erlen 31.
With the regional bus R11 (Bad Wünnenberg city transport), the nearest stop is "Aatal-Klinik". From there, it is a maximum of 300m to the Kurpark

Alternatively, take the bus line R10 and get off at the "Burgstraße" stop. From the upper town, take the street "Hoppenberg" (next to the crosswalk) and follow the street downhill until you reach the crossroads "Im Aatal". The Kurpark is then already diagonally to your left. You can reach the entrance a few meters further straight ahead (In den Erlen), for example, and then you will already come to the walking route.

The local bus 410 also stops at the "Burgstraße" stop, as does the line 415 during school hours. Walking distance: 700m, but steep incline.

To avoid the incline, the "Schäferstraße" stop is also suitable. You can also change trains there. The distance to the Kurpark entrance at the Waldschwimmbad is 850m.
