AROUND THE SUNNY AND WARM ROCK FACE
As a volcanic peak, the Dächelsberg looks back on a fiery past. Its basalt core was mined here at the quarry for around 100 years. The viewing tower offers a wonderful view of the former quarry face. A panorama board reveals interesting details about the rocks, habitats and inhabitants of the old quarry. The site is now a nature reserve and may only be entered for the necessary tree and meadow pruning. The Dächelsberg loop around the village of Oberbachem, which starts here, also promises plenty of sunshine.
THE DÄCHELSBERG CIRCUIT
A 7.3 km long, varied and historically exciting circular tour awaits inquisitive hikers on the Dächelsberg. Five locations tell of a fiery past and the diverse uses of volcanic rock. The observation tower at the Dächelsberg starting point provides a view of the nature reserve and the former quarry where basalt was once mined for road construction, while the Dächelsberg loop reveals what the “Eselsweg” has to do with Cologne Cathedral and the Jette mine with refractory ceramics. The trail leads past beautiful meadows and fruit trees to the trachyte-decorated Church of the Three Kings. Zinc, lead and copper ores were mined underground in the former Laura mine. You can find more information about the route under Tour tip.
