The circular trail "On a dive in the shell limestone sea" is both part of the "Exquisite Nature" in the Höxter cultural region and part of the "Eco Paths" in the district of Kassel. It runs for almost 12 kilometers over the ridges and through the Diemel valley. Discover beautiful views and extraordinary flora and fauna on this circular tour.
The trail is sometimes a narrow forest path through magnificent beech forests, sometimes it leads along the edge of the forest and offers wonderful views of the Diemel valley. For a short stretch, you even accompany the Diemel on its course towards the Weser and can marvel at the geological outcrops of the Lower Muschelkalk. The Diemel is crossed twice along the route. The two villages you pass through - Ostheim and Lamerden - also offer many small discoveries. One highlight is certainly the Ostheimer Hute with its juniper heaths and the orchids or gentians that bloom depending on the season. immerse yourself and enjoy a journey through 240 million years of geological history.Good to know

From here, the route leads back into the beech forest and finally through a field and meadow landscape down to Lamerden. The Diemel is crossed again, and a butterfly mosaic in the village indicates that the Diemel Valley is known as the "Valley of Butterflies". After all, around 100 species of the mostly colorful butterflies have already been recorded here. Once again, the trail climbs slightly uphill to the remains of a redoubt from the Seven Years' War, which is also a nice place to take a break with a view of the Diemel Valley. A narrow little path now leads along the edge of the forest and offers beautiful views of the wide landscape on the other side, before the path leads deeper into the beech forest again to the junction back to the parking lot. Now it's time to take a deep breath and tackle the last steep climb back to the starting point.
