Weilerbach - Hohllay

The Felsenweg 1 hiking route in the NaturWanderPark delux in the southern Eifel starts in Echternach, Luxembourg's oldest city. From afar, the nine bells resound from the towering spires of the basilica, pride of the former imperial abbey. Under the stern gaze of the stately figures on the façade of the Denzelt - once a meeting place, court, prison and torture chamber - we walk across the medieval-looking market square, then through an alley with numerous cafés to the edge of town, where a path leads steeply uphill.
High above the town, at Trooskneppchen, a romantic pavilion made of logs welcomes you at the entrance to the forest. Take a seat and enjoy the view. The former Benedictine monastery dominates the scenery and gives you an idea of how powerful the abbots once were. The Sauer River has dug deep into the mighty step of the Luxembourg sandstone, separating the Ferschweiler Plateau from Luxembourg Switzerland. Today it marks the border to Germany in a meandering way.
Leave the hustle and bustle of the abbey town behind you and dive into the green of the forest. Descend into the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf Gorge), climb up between walls of rocks that seem to reach into the sky. Stop, nestle together, feel warmth in the cool gorge. Other highlights await you, such as the Huel Lee millstone grotto and the Breechkaul amphitheater.
On the German side of the Sûre, you will hike to the playful and romantic Weilerbach Castle: a baroque castle to dream about - be the lord and lady of the castle for once and take a stroll in the large garden. Now cuddle up on the double lounger at the leisure spot, forget time for two.
The Felsenweg also lives up to its name on the German side of the valley. Along wild rock formations, the path winds along the edge of the plateau to the Ernzerberg, surprising again and again with ravishing viewpoints and sights. The Liborius Chapel and the nearby rooms carved into the rock of the hermitage, which was still inhabited until 1783, tell of the deeply rooted piety.
And now treat yourself to a rest on the Kuckuckslay: spread out your picnic blanket on the altar of the Lochstein, let your glasses clink and enjoy the delicacies you have brought with you.

Of cunning foxes and mighty wolves

The Felsenweg 1 is one of the leisure paths in the NaturWanderPark delux. At two leisure spots you will find a rotating fox-wolf sculpture. It shows you how mighty wolves and cunning foxes once stood up to each other and wrote history: "Local fables and stories know interesting things to tell. And so you also come to the conclusion: Who can not be wolf, must be fox!"
