The Hellwegbörde is an important breeding area for farmland birds – some of them rarities, like the Montagu's Harrier – but also for Partridges, Quails and Skylarks. In the Schledden valleys and quarries, the abundance of flowers in the nutrient-poor meadows attracts large numbers of butterflies and grasshoppers.

Directions
You can start the circular cycling route through the Hellwegbörde at the park "Mythos Stein", an old limestone quarry south of Geseke. It leads along the Westerschledde and past the Eringerfeld forest on the Haarstrang range of hills at Oestereiden. In Westereiden the route crosses the Pöppelsche Valley in two places before it goes down again past the Erwitte quarries into the low plain of the Unterbörde. In this area, the route passes the Muckenbruch nature reserve. In Geseke, the cycle path leads back to the starting point.
