Directions

The fifth stage leads you first a piece upstream the Kirnitzschtal to the Buschmühle. You hike left in the direction of Arnstein (archaeological remains of a medieval rock castle). Then you reach the Neue Weg and the Kleinstein with a view and Sturmbauers Eck to the road in the direction of Räumichtmühle, which you follow to the junction of the Mühlschlüchte. A natural, steep path leads you up to the Großer Pohlshorn. You hike down to the Kirnitzsch and then through old spruce and silver fir stands to the Zeughaus. From here, the trail climbs up through the Wolfsschlüchte, over the Rosssteig and the Katzstein to the summit of the Großer Winterberg, the second highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland. This 556-meter-high basaltic breakthrough is crowned by the plate of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains by a mountain restaurant and an observation tower; next to it, in the former "ice house", another national park information center invites you to visit. Afterwards, the Malerweg leads down into the Elbe Valley to the small village of Schmilka. Here you will come directly to the Schmilka water mill. Based on the copperplate engraving by A. L. Richter, the mill was reconstructed in 2007 and has been fully functional again since then.
