The Christmas Market at Satzvey Castle has been one of the most beautiful historical Christmas markets with a medieval nativity play in the Eifel region for many years. The festive atmosphere with shimmering lights, the scent of Christmas, and the historical ambiance of the castle not only bring joy to children but to everyone. Stroll past the market stalls where vendors offer their handmade goods and regional specialties. Whether it's wooden toys, Christmas ornaments, nativities, soaps, or incense — you are sure to find the perfect gift or a memento for yourself. The nativity play, designed to reflect the Staufer era with elaborate costumes, has taken place several times daily in the castle park for over 15 years. At that time, most of the population could not read, and performances brought the Christmas story closer to the people. The scenes are still spoken in Latin and Middle High German, and a proclaimer translates them for the audience into German, accompanied by a harmonious ringing of bells.
For children, there is an opportunity in Santa's workshop to drop their wish lists, crafted at home, into the mailbox and to see Santa Claus with his elves, who are busy preparing gifts. Here and there, they sneak a sweet treat into the hoods of the children, adding fun for the whole family!
The Christmas Market serves, like other events at Satzvey, which also include the legendary knights' festivities, to preserve the castle. Under the motto "Preservation through Entertainment," the family of Count Beissel von Gymnich maintains the water castle and presents it to the public with a varied program throughout the year. Those who want to delve deeper into the history of the castle can join a guided tour to see the castle and its magnificent halls from the inside. The price for a guided tour is €5 for adults and €3 for children aged 4 to 12 years. Children under 4 years can participate free of charge when accompanied by an adult. Other events throughout the year invite visitors to come.
Santa Claus and Elves
Santa Claus will be on site with his elves to collect the children's wish lists. His beautifully dressed elves busily move around, slipping sweet treats into visitors’ hands. Additionally, stuffed animals and toys that have been donated and are looking for a new home will be distributed. On Saturdays until 3 PM, children can have their brought boots filled.
Nativity Play several times daily: Saturdays between 12:00 and 20:00, Sundays between 12:00 and 19:00.
As this is an outdoor event, we recommend wearing weather-resistant footwear.
