New Year's Concert of the Young Philharmonic Cologne
Anyone who attends a New Year's concert of the Young Philharmonic Cologne knows that on this day, the light muse is ruled by mischief and humor from chief conductor Volker Hartung.
In addition to masterpieces by Edward Grieg and Jaques Offenbach and Maurice Ravel, the New Year's concert will also feature, in celebration of the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss Jr., among others, the overture to "The Gypsy Baron," the Champagne Polka, and the Carmen Fantasy by Pablo de Sarasate performed by the young virtuosos of the orchestra.
