“Building,” says historian Wolfram Pyta, “was a core area of Nazi rule.” Buildings and architecture from this period illustrate the political and ideological self-understanding of the National Socialists.
In 2023, Vogelsang IP received six photo albums documenting the construction history of the Nazi Order Castle Vogelsang from 1934 to 1937 as a gift from the family estate of Dieter and Peter Derichs. They document the construction site in much greater detail and with numerous details, allowing many previously unanswered questions to be clarified. Essential parts of the structural execution of Vogelsang were in the hands of the Aachen family business Derichs u. Konertz KG, which was founded in 1926.
The photo albums are significant for research on the Nazi Order Castle, as they provide new and in-depth insights into the events on-site until the summer of 1937. They also served as an occasion to highlight in this small exhibition the reasons why the planning and construction process in Vogelsang was characterized by unrest and activism from the very beginning.
