The Alte Nikolaischule was built between 1511 and 1512 as Leipzig's first city school. The present tavern opened in the historic building after a renovation that took place between 1991 and 1994. The menu offers primarily plain and Saxon cuisine, which is served to their guests in a dining room that used to serve as a classroom for the students. Visitors also have access to the arcade café, the English colonial-style lounge on the first floor and, in summer, a large patio with views of the Nikolai column, the granite fountain and the Nikolai church.
