The Afelskreuz (indulgence cross) stands on an old Roman military road.
For centuries, pilgrims from the Bonn-Cologne area have been pilgrimaging along this road to the grave of the Apostle Matthias in Trier.
In the vernacular this path is therefore also called the pilgrim road. However, there is another name: until the 1930s, farmers and traders drove cattle and pigs past the Afelskreuz to the markets in Kelberg and Mehren. This fact gives the path its second name: Piglet Road.
