The Wellier Kolk is located in the landscape conservation area "Weseraltarm westlich der Staustufe Landesbergen" and was placed under nature conservation by a conservation area ordinance dated 30.09.1969. The landscape conservation area is approx. 410 ha in size. The natural bathing lake is about twelve hectares in size. The name "Kolk" is the old North German word for "water hole".
The Weser estuary and the various kolks provide a particularly favorable habitat for numerous species of waders and waterfowl. In addition to its value for breeding birds, this water landscape is particularly important as a resting area for migratory bird species, for which the Weser lowlands serve as a guide.
The "Wellier Kolk" has always been used by the local population as a bathing water, as it is free of significant currents, unlike the nearby Weser.
The Kolk is also very popular with anglers. The simultaneous practice of fishing and bathing is made possible by the fact that bathing in the Kolk is limited to the area of the bathing area. There you will find a bathing jetty, a small beach and a sunbathing area. Swimming is therefore at your own risk.
Free parking, sunbathing lawn, toilets and changing rooms, dogs are prohibited
Please find out in advance whether there are any restrictions (e.g. swimming ban due to blue-green algae etc.).
