Döblitz Fortified Church

Church
The medieval village churches in Döblitz and Schüptitz are normally referred to in literature as “fortified churches”, as they were surrounded by an embankment or their tower had a protruding shape.
This small choir tower church with its rectangular nave is one of the oldest preserved mission chapels in the Saale-Orla District and was probably founded by Benedictine monks from Saalfeld at the beginning of the 13th century. A fresco dating from the 14th/15th century was uncovered inside the building during the 1960s: it shows Christ in a mandorla between Mary and John as well as Saint Andrew. The church was originally surrounded by an embankment with a moat and it has been possible to partly restore this as an archaeological monument.
