The plateau was developed for tourism as early as the 19th century. The Swiss-style mountain lodge, which still stands today, was built at that time. Next to the building is a lookout tower, which offers distant views in several directions.
The area is part of the core zone of the national park. The surrounding forests are largely untouched and specially protected. A small house on the plateau provides information about the flora, fauna and geology of the area.
The ascent is usually from Schmilka via the steep mountain path or the Winterberg road. The paths are well marked, but challenging in places. Extensive rest areas and a clear view of the German-Czech border landscape await at the top.
