The old church in Kirchlengern was built in 1525. At that time, there was a separate entrance for each social class. Numerous chairs were owned by the lords of the manor of Oberbehme and Steinlake as well as other long-established farming families. Due to these privileges and the growing population, the now dilapidated church became too small at the end of the 19th century. It was demolished in 1919 and the larger church that still stands here today was built in its place in just two years.
However, the old church tower has been preserved - it has only been extended. The old pews were incorporated into the new furnishings, but the old privileges were removed without replacement. The last major renovation of the interior took place in the 1960s. Since then, only the "Behmer chair" has remained from the seating of the old church, which occupies a place of honor in the nave.At the entrance to the cemetery, opposite the church tower, stands a huge hanging beech tree. This stately specimen has a trunk circumference of 3.60 m and is protected as a natural monument due to its great age of around 120 years.Further information: www.fahr-im-kreis.de
