Nestled in the historic centre of Radegast near the Elbe Cycle Route, the church stands as a quiet witness to centuries of history and faith. Since 1653, the church’s patron saint has remained unknown, lending the building a touch of mystery. Despite a devastating fire in 1627 that destroyed much of its interior, the community rebuilt and renewed it over time. The sacristy was added in 1729, and the old tower was replaced with the current structure in 1759/60, restoring the church’s distinctive silhouette on the village skyline. Inside, visitors are greeted by an atmosphere of elegance and simplicity. The altar, created in 1811, serves as the centrepiece of the sanctuary, complemented by exquisite brass chandeliers from 1658 and beautifully embroidered altar cloths from 1801 and 1849. The wooden pulpit of 1811 reflects remarkable craftsmanship from a bygone era, while the organ, installed in 1884, continues to fill the space with its resonant sound. After an extensive renovation, regular services have been held here again since 1998. In the warmer months, the church opens its doors to travellers and cyclists as part of the network of “Radwegekirchen” – churches along cycling routes that offer quiet moments for rest, reflection, and inspiration amidst the scenic landscapes of the Elbe region.
