The church of St. Nicolai is a Gothic hall church with a two-tower west building that can be seen far across the Leine valley. It is named after Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of sailors and merchants in the Middle Ages.
The current building is the result of various phases of expansion. The original church was a Romanesque building from the end of the 11th century. At that time, the Freden archdeaconry was relocated here, which gave an important impetus to the development of the town of Alfeld. The church was a cruciform basilica, of which the main structure of the westwork and the former crossing pillars are still preserved. Around 1400, the nave was converted into a Gothic hall, and towards the end of the same century, the Romanesque choir was replaced by three additional bays. The church's furnishings include a triumphal cross dated to around 1230/1240.Good to know
