Lamspringe Monastery

The foundation of the Benedictine convent goes back to the foundation of the Saxon Count Ricdag in 847. The nunnery developed into an important spiritual institution. The Reformation in 1568 led to its transformation into a Protestant convent for ladies of the Duchy of Brunswick, which existed until it was returned to the diocese of Hildesheim in 1629. In 1643, English Benedictines revived the monastery. Until 1691 they created the present church in the style of the Westphalian post-Gothic with its rich Baroque interior and the abbey. The newly founded monastery flourished quickly and existed until its dissolution in 1803 as the only English monastery on German soil.
The church is a three-nave hall church with four vaulted bays supported by six eight-sided pillars and wall consoles. Seven Baroque altars have adorned the church for more than 300 years.
