In 1905, the Hamburg Bethesda Sisterhood moved to Rotenburg (Wümme) and established a deaconess house. Together with the deaconesses and the residents of Rotenburg, the church was consecrated in 1912 after around two years of construction.
The church was named after the Gospel of this Sunday, in which Jesus Christ says: "I am the good shepherd. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give them eternal life". (John 10, 27f)

The interior of the church was painted by the then church painter Rudolf Schäfer (1878 - 1961). The altarpiece, a triptych depicting the birth of Jesus, the five wise virgins and the disciples of Emmaus, the cross and the window on the east side of the church have been preserved.
Rudolf Schäfer lived in Rotenburg, and the small regional museum "Rudolf-Schäfer Haus" in the pedestrian zone was his studio and home. His tomb is located on the south side of the apse.
