St. Alexandri Collegiate Church, also called the Minster, was built as a three-aisled hall church from a significantly smaller, Romanesque preceding building from 1275 to 1508. It was founded by Earl Dietrich II of Katlenburg in honour of Saint Alexander in the 11th century. The Collegiate and associated buildings had its own administration and jurisdiction in an area that was called the “Collegiate freedom”.
