The St. Jakobi Church is a neo-Gothic hall church that was built from 1896 to 1899 according to plans by Eberhard Hillebrand. The paintings and stained glass windows were designed by Alexander Linnemann.
The old church on the market square was destroyed in the town fire of 1557 and the new St. Jakobi Church was built on its current site. This building was replaced by a new one in 1692 and demolished in 1895 due to dilapidation.
The current building was consecrated on March 19, 1899.
The single-nave, three-bay nave is intersected by a short transept and leads into the chancel. The tall square tower above the pillared portal has four gables, a cross roof and a tall, slender ridge turret.
The wealth of color and figures is impressive. The murals were faithfully restored in 1992-1994 after being painted over in 1937 and 1962. The Hammer organ dates back to 1963 and was extensively renovated in 2011 by organ builder Christoph Grefe (Ilsede).
