Artlenburg's landmark: The majestic St Nicolai Church
One night in April 1821, the Gothic church, which had been built on a raised platform at the beginning of the 14th century, fell victim to a devastating fire, which also reduced much of the surrounding village to ashes. In the course of the reconstruction of Artlenburg, the ruins of the old church gave rise to today's church, which presents itself in a classicist architectural style. Classicism, an era inspired by the architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans, was characterised by simple, clear lines and bright, light-flooded rooms. The staging of the altar and pulpit in the style of a Greek temple reflects this aesthetic.

A striking feature of the reconstruction was the relocation of the entrance from the east side, resulting in an unconventionally transverse nave with two entrances on the north side. The massive tower of St Nicolai's Church rises majestically above the landscape and serves as the town's unmistakable landmark, which is also reflected in the town's coat of arms. Its imposing silhouette is visible from afar and lends the village an aura of permanence and grandeur.
