St Dionys: A jewel of neo-Gothic architecture in Lower Saxony
St. Dionys Church, one of the most impressive village churches in Lower Saxony, sits enthroned in the middle of an idyllic landscape. According to legend, Charlemagne laid the foundation stone for the first church here back in 795. It was named after Charlemagne's patron saint, St Dionysius, who was beheaded as Bishop of Paris in 285 during a persecution of Christians.
The current church, built in neo-Gothic style and consecrated in 1860, stands on the site of its predecessor. After extensive renovation, it presents itself to visitors in its original splendour and blaze of colour. Particularly impressive are the baptismal font from 1608/1689, the painted wood grain on the pulpit and galleries, the ornate coffered ceiling and the striking altar backdrop. The romantic Furtwängler organ was faithfully reconstructed by the organ builder Amadeus Junker (Meinersen) and fills the church with its harmonious sound.
